See here for the Notice of Meeting, which gives details of the forthcoming Langtoft Bowls Club AGM scheduled for Saturday 24th January 2026 at 2:00 p.m in Langtoft Village Hall. Proposals for discussion at the meeting, or nominations for any of the vacant positions on the Committee should be submitted to the club Secretary by any of the means in the recently sent email.

From our Club Secretary “I am writing to let you know that Richard Montgomery sadly passed away on Saturday.  Richard was a Life member, who helped set up the club, and I know he was well known to many of you.
Once I have details of the funeral arrangements, I will let you know.”

Entries have been invited to two open tournaments that Deeping BA have decided to run in 2026. A Fixed Jack Triples on Sunday 7th June 2026 and a Two Wood Fours on Sunday 9th August 2026. Please see below links to entry forms for both competitions.
Sunday 7th June 2026 – Deeping BA Open Fixed Jack triples, click here for entry form.
Sunday 9th August 2026 – Deeping BA Open Two Bowl Fours, click here for entry form.
Deeping BA can accommodate 24 teams for each of the tournaments and entry is on a first come first serve basis, so get your entries in early to avoid disappointment.

Sadly, Mike Northen passed away at home yesterday.  I’m sure we will all miss Mike, and our thoughts will be with Ann at this very sad time.
Update – Mike’s funeral service will take place on Monday 29 December 2025 at 11 a.m. at the Abbey Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Bourne (PE10 9JH). All are welcome. There will be family flowers only, but donations to the Peterborough Dialysis Unit and Marie Curie can be sent to T.R. Carlton, Funeral Directors.

Mike and Ann at the 2024 Coronation Trophy.

Although it may be raining and miserable outside and not a day to contemplate outdoor bowling, I am writing to you to invite you to put your name down for the days/teams that you would like to play next year, 2026, in the Peterborough Leagues and Stamford League. Last year we worked a bit back to front, signing teams up in the Peterborough Leagues before getting your commitment to play which resulted in us having to withdraw one team (a second Saturday team) and nearly a second team (Thursday evening Sixes) last minute, for which we were quite rightly pulled up by the league as it meant the league from which we withdrew ended up short of teams and hence those teams ended up short of fixtures. So this year, we’re asking for your commitments and will then only enter teams where we have enough names and therefore are confident we can support the team entries and therefore the resultant fixture list. You may say that this sounds obvious and of course it is, but as your committee we are working hard to improve the structured way in which we work, not only for league/cup entries but also for example in our planning and preparation of capital investment in the club, more of that later.
The potential team entries and captains who have volunteered to run the teams are similar to last year :-
Stamford League Monday and Friday evenings – Mick Fisher
Peterborough League Tuesday afternoons Club 55 League – John Taylor (Red) and Ann Northen (Blue)
Peterborough League Wednesday evening Midweek League – Jim Pryor (Division 1) and Robin Freeman (Division 3)
Peterborough League Thursday evening Sixes League – Mark Plyte
Peterborough League Saturday afternoon Weekend League – John Taylor
The guidance we received at a recent Captains meeting, is to ask members to put their names down for the days on which they wish to play and where we have more than one team playing i.e. Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday evenings, the captains will put their heads together and sort you into teams. If you have specific preferences, then please talk to the relevant captain. Some captains have also specified a maximum number of players that they want for their squad for reasons of management / giving players reasonable amounts of playing time, the relevant forms reflect this.
So, if you look on the League Teams noticeboard in the clubhouse, you will see the forms for each of the days onto which you can add your names. If you are not sure which day to put your name down for, on each of the forms is a brief overview of what it means to play on each day. If you have questions beyond what is on the forms, please speak to the relevant captain who will help answer any questions.
Commitment is required by mid January, ideally the sooner the better please, thanks Jim…

Friday 21st November is fast approaching, and with it our annual presentation night, I hope the bloke who does all the trophies and prizes will be ready!! which once again will be held at The Black horse in Baston. This year, Geoff decided to push the date back so that it falls within the Black Horses festive season, so the expectation is that the room will be set up with a seasonal theme. It may be an opportunity for you to bring out your special jumpers for the first time this year.
You should all have received an email with the food options, a two meat carvery (beef or turkey) with seasonal trimmings, plus a choice of desserts, followed by tea/coffee, See the menu/order form attached to your email.
As in the past raffle prizes will be appreciated. It would help if as many as possible could be left at the club house prior to the evening.
Looking forward to the evening always one of the highlights of the year.

On 17th October 2025 we held a race night at Langtoft Village Hall which raised £852 overall for club funds. All 9 races on the night were sponsored with a number of local businesses involved..Special thanks to Graham Watkins who obtained 6 sponsors.at £20 a race. Prior to the evening owners and jockeys for each  of the 8 race were purchased  with the winning jockeys and owners on the night each collecting £10. On the evening  thanks to Tom Mehew who ran the evening with  each race screened and an automated tote. After 8 races we then had an Auction race and a game of bingo. All in all a fun evening and excellent way of generating funds for the club. Thanks to all who participated,
Geoff

You should all have received an email from Carol, our secretary re “Langtoft Bowls Club will be holding an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) in the club house on Wednesday 24 September at 10.30 a.m.  Please find the attached Notice of Meeting which gives further detail.” I appreciate that a number of members work, for the remainder, it would be great to see as many of you there as possible.

Our season closer was played on Sunday and what a great day it was, with some fantastic bowling, a great buffet and a glass of fizz (thanks Bernie). Although a little on the cold side compared to the last couple of months and with a shower or two in the last game, it didn’t dampen our spirits. Our Rose bowl winners this year are Martin, Lynn and Mark, who won all five of their games. whilst JohnT, ChrisN and Gary picked up the Plate by just one shot from third place team AnneW, Robin and JohnV, thanks everyone for a lovely day.

As so to our penultimate competition of the season, battling it out for the Coronation Trophy which so far has remained under the ownership of Nick, could someone else prise the trophy from his hands this year?
There were twenty entries which Nick, as organiser divided up into three leagues, red, blue and white in keeping with the theme for the day. As usual Nick made it to the final determined to hang on to the trophy, awaiting him was stiff opposition in the form of Anne and Sue. Nick wasn’t classed as the favourite for nothing though and so he dispatched that challenge (Sue, if only that final bowl had taken the jack back…) and once again received the Coronation Trophy to make it a hat trick of victories, well done Nick.
Of equal importance was the corner to corner KitKat challenge, well, it does involve chocolate, and coming out on top was Sue for the ladies and John for the men, save a chunk for me…

Club Knockout finals – Further to the last update, we now have several volunteers for the various roles for finals weekend on the 30th and 31st August, thank you to all those who have volunteered their services. With only two knockout matches to go, we are nearly able to start planning the finals. An initial list is already up on the competitions noticeboard. Based on our qualifiers, I think it will be possible to play the matches over four sessions, two on Saturday and two on Sunday. I have considered running all four sessions on one day, but with Nick qualifying for four finals, I think to play four matches on one day is unreasonable, so we’ll stick to the two days. Your committee has taken the decision not to run a BBQ this year, so please bring a packed lunch with you. There will of course be homemade cakes and coffee available to purchase. I haven’t checked in the clubhouse, but if you won a trophy last year and have not returned it yet, please do so in good time for this year’s finals.
I have a handful of raffle prizes, more would be gratefully accepted, thank you.
Events Coronation Trophy– Last time I checked the form on the clubhouse wall, we had 14 entrants of a maximum 28 for the 7th September, so if you’ve not yet put your name down, please do so. Full details are up on the competition noticeboard, come on let’s support Nick who’s organising this one.
Events Rose Bowl and Plate– An entry form for the traditional season ender, 14th September, is now up on the noticeboard. This will be run as a drawn pairs /triples competition depending on the number of entrants, again, please get your name down for this one.
Northants Dan Duffy and Adams Cup Competitions 2026 – A list is up on the external competitions noticeboard, if you would like to play in either of these next year, please put your name down so that we know if we have enough interest as a club to enter.
Committee Meeting Minutes  – last week I was asked by a member about the availability of the committee meeting minutes. These are available in a folder in the dresser in the clubhouse for all to view once approved and signed off by the chairman which will be at the meeting following the meeting in which they were recorded. Please take a moment to have a look and see what your committee gets up to at our monthly meetings.

Competitions Knockout Competitions– Congratulations to all those who have reached the club finals, good luck to all those with games to play and commiserations to those who have been knocked out. After a bit of a shaky start all the matches are now being played to schedule with one or two utilising the contingency week, not a problem, that’s what it is there for.
Club Knockout finals – You will have seen an email from me a couple of days ago asking for volunteers to fill various roles for the finals on the 30th and 31st August. To date, the response has been great, but as always it’s the usual volunteers, it would be great to get a few more people involved in various capacities please. There’s a list in the clubhouse, or drop me an email or a phone call. Planning for the weekend is underway and it would be great to see spectators there for each of the sessions encouraging your club mates. To this end, my plan is to keep the sessions to a minimum, however this will largely depend on individuals reaching multiple finals.
Events Coronation Trophy– This trophy was delayed from its original date and is rescheduled for the 7th September, Nick has put the new entry form up on the board, so please put your name down. This is always great fun and yet another differing format.
Events Rose Bowl and Plate– This is our traditional season ender and this year is scheduled for the 14th September. Details coming soon.
Suggestion Box – It has been suggested that we have a suggestion box, so rather than put up a new box, please put your suggestions in the letter box on the end wall. All suggestions submitted will be discussed at the following committee meeting.
Events Race Night – It’s all systems go for our race night on the 17th October, which will be run by an external company in coordination with Geoff Tinson and the social team. Hope to see you all there for that. Details in Geoff’s email to all of you on the 3rd August.
Dan Duffy Final– On July 17th, on behalf of The Northants Federation (NBF) we hosted the Dan Duffy cup county final. The final between Parkway and Blackstones bowls club resulted in some excellent bowling with Blackstones coming out on top. As a club I thought we did an excellent job, unfortunately I felt that the NBF somewhat let the side down, with no introduction, wrap up or thank you’s, oh well…
Our Green  – heat wave after heat wave is certainly challenging for Nick, I for one think he’s doing a good job, yes the green is running faster than many of you would like, but the challenge is to adapt, can you do it?
and finally…
Code of Conduct – a gentle reminder to all of our playing members that as a club, we have adopted the Bowls Development Alliance’s code of conduct, see here and therefore all our members are bound by this. There is no place for any negativity or abuse on the green, some may consider it ‘banter’, but your committee will not tolerate it if we witness it or it is reported.

Entry forms for the Mens/Mixed Northants Bowling Federation (NBF) competitions have been received. Closing date for the entries is October 15th 2025 See the forms for details of entry costs, formats available etc. You have the option of playing outdoors in the 2026 summer season or if you’re a member of an indoor club, playing indoor matches over the winter 2025/2026 season. Either way, when entering, your ‘outdoor club’ will be Langtoft Bowls Club.
We also have the opportunity as a club to enter into club team competitions, namely the Dan Duffy, for which we would want four rinks of three players, playing two bowls and the Adams Cup for which we would want three rinks of three players playing two bowls. For these club competitions, I’ll put a list up on the ‘external competitions’ noticeboard in the clubhouse to gauge interest, entries close for these competitions too on the 15th October, so feedback on this required by 30th September please.

It was suggested that we run a pairs competition mixing a newer bowler and an experienced bowler to help share that experience and knowledge, and so we did under the leadership of Anne White. With sixteen entries, Anne sorted us into a eight mixed pairs, playing four matches each of 1 hour, bell to bell duration. It was tight at the top of the leader board with three pairs having scored six points in their four matches, Adie and Mavis, Andrew and Carol and AnnC and David. A draw saw Adie and Mavis play Andrew and Carol in a one end shoot out for the right to play David and AnnC in the final with Adie and Mavis prevailing. And so after a hot and long day, the final was a one end shoot out with Adie and Mavis picking up the trophies after a super shot by Mavis, trailing the jack back where despite a valiant effort, AnnC was unable to pick the jack up missing by a whisker.
Lunch was provided by Liz and Adie, some delicious homemade scones with jam and cream, thank you very much Liz and Adie for providing those and with Rita providing the tea and coffee, thank you Rita.

Last night Langtoft Bowls Club hosted a visit from the Deeping 41 Club organised by Geoff Tinson. On the night our visitors were guided by Nick, Sue, Geoff, Jim and Chris through 5 challenges with the culminating in a spider. A good time was had by all. Who knows, we might even find ourselves a new member or two…
(Thank you to Sue for the extra photos)

We were asked by Northants Federation last Thursday to host their Dan Duffy knockout tournament final, always good to see some of the top local players competing on our green…

Knockout Competition Rules – over the past few days, a number of situations have arisen where competitors have not familiarised themselves with the club competition rules. These have been sent out in both draft and published format by email to all members from early spring and posted on the club competition noticeboard, they are now too on the club website https://langtoftbowls.club/ with links to them from each of the competition pages https://langtoftbowls.club/club-competitions/ I am sure many of you have read the rules, but please I implore of you that haven’t to take a look at the rules so that we avoid the issues that I have experienced over the last few days. The rules are largely unchanged from previous years, but I spent a lot of time over the winter trying to formalise what we have now for the benefit of all members, also taking into account the rules for the majority of external leagues in which we play. The excuse that “it’s what we’ve always done” is not valid and of course means nothing to our newer members whom it appears to me to be the majority of those who have familiarised themselves with the rules. Also as per a previous email in January “To be clear, the formats of and any changes to one day or knockout competitions are always discussed and adopted after full discussion at committee level.”
Knockout Competition Dates of Rounds– As of this morning and two days after the previous round of competitions should have been completed, there are 10 outstanding matches (8 are scheduled for the coming week) and for which I am partially guilty of one of them (as has been pointed out). I totally understand that people have been ill, people have been recuperating from operations etc and that recently the very hot weather has not been conducive to playing bowls on some days. However I know that not meeting the deadlines has caused frustration, as I am on the receiving end of these members’ frustrations! Plus I don’t really want to be chasing people asking if they’ve got their matches arranged. Whilst the onus is on the first named player (home player / challenger) to get the game scheduled, I would like to think that common sense would prevail and either player contact the other to get the game played, this doesn’t have to be a formal process, most times a phone call and a chat will do the trick. If you really are having trouble arranging a match, let me know and I’ll help get it arranged or if absolutely necessary arrange an extension. I really don’t want to get to the point of using the competition rules and turfing people out of competitions for non compliance.
Coronation Trophy– As you know, Nick has kindly agreed to run the competition this year and the entry form is up on the noticeboard, get your names down. This is always great fun and yet another differing format.
Dan Duffy Final– The Northants Federation have asked Langtoft bowls club to host this county final on Thursday 17th July at 6:30 on the basis that “You have hosted it in the past and I know both teams were impressed with the playing surface and your hospitality” which is nice to hear. The final will be between Parkway and Blackstones bowls club meaning that the very best of local bowlers skills will be on display (outside of Langtoft Bowls Club!) and therefore should be great entertainment.
Green team – Nick is still looking for people to join the green team to help with brushing, mowing, spiking, weed walking etc. In the summer we undertake some form of maintenance most days and  cut the green three times a week. Just an hour or two of your time would be much appreciated and help ease the load on the existing team of four. To be clear, you don’t have to be able to commit every week. Full training in the use of the equipment will be given. Please speak to Nick to have a chat about what you could do to help, he really could do with some help.
Our Green  – the green is under assault on two fronts, firstly the lack of rain and secondly from chafer grubs. I know Nick is pulling his hair out as he takes great pride in producing a great green with the obstacles he currently faces. The issue of the chafer grubs, which eat away at the roots of the grass will shortly be tackled by Nick and our contractor Tony, at significant cost to the club, whilst the lack of rain is being tackled by regular watering. A larger water holding tank has been identified by Nick as a future project for consideration for the club, but in the meantime Nick continues to do the best he can, I know that there’s no one more frustrated than Nick with the speed of the green at the moment. I have to admit, it’s even a bit fast for us indoor bowlers!

The Langtoft 19 final was played today between Chris Newcomb and Jim Pryor. A real game of two halves keeping the crowd entertained, with Jim managing to win on the last end. The final score was 16-15 after 19 ends and a combined 152 bowls delivered!
Thank you to Bernie for marking, Sue for donating and presenting the trophy, Nick for preparing us the best green locally and those who came to support both players.

Another great win in the Boor and Wainwright, needing to overcome a net 24 shot handicap, we did it by just one shot, with it all happening on the last bowl of the last end of the last rink to finish! So, we’re currently in third place in our group with four points and two games to play. Both teams above us have finished their games and are on eight and seven points respectively, so if we win our last two games, we’ll make the knockout stages and at that point maybe other teams will have to give us some shots!

Knockout Competition – For those of you who entered the knockout competitions, as planned, the draws were made on Wednesday coffee morning. The draws have now been updated and are on the club website, https://langtoftbowls.club/club-competitions/ with the original hand written draws being displayed on the competition noticeboard.
Langtoft 19 final – it’s the final of the Langtoft 19, this coming Sunday at 12:00pm between myself and Chris Newcomb with Sue Moir presenting the trophy. If you’ve got a spare hour, come along and cheer us on.
Club Competition Rules – Further to a request by some members to allow black to be worn below the waist, the committee unanimously  voted to allow this in club competitions, all members should have received an updated set of competition rules that reflects this. Note that grey only below the waist still applies for external leagues and competitions as this is bound by the club constitution which cannot be changed by the committee and would require a vote at an AGM.
Rink Booking – The external leagues and cups are in full swing and are all booked and visible in the bowlr system. If you are booking roll ups or internal club knockout matches, we would ask that you are mindful of external matches being played later in the day and if possible try to book other rinks to avoid using the same rinks as will be used later.
Club Fire Exits – Please remember that both the main clubhouse door and the gate next to the main clubhouse are Fire Exits and under no circumstances should a car be parked in front of or partially blocking them, even briefly, thank you.

Committee – we are currently meeting once a month, signed off meeting minutes may be found in the main clubhouse should you wish to see what is being discussed and progressed. We would welcome input from members, let us know what you are thinking.
Green – in general the green is playing remarkably well so early in the season, helped in no small part by the drier than average spring and the regular work undertaken by the green team under Nick’s stewardship. The dry edges are largely as a result of the work undertaken to strengthen and level the edges last autumn and will take a while to grass and firm up, if you could avoid walking on these areas to allow them to develop, it would be appreciated. See the edge nearest the clubhouse which was strengthened the previous year which has pretty much fully recovered. We are often compared to the likes of Parkway, City of Peterborough and Blackstones and having played at Parkway last week, I can tell you that the Langtoft green is currently bowling better than their green! You can deliver your bowls, you don’t have to chuck ’em.
Projects – your committee is currently building and prioritising a list of projects to be undertaken over the coming months and years from ongoing maintenance improvements to larger investment projects. The intention is to bring this to the AGM so that you know our vision for developing your club. Do you have ideas on ways to improve our facility? Again, if so, let a member of the committee know.
Green team – As per last month’s newsletter, Nick is still looking for people to join the green team to help with brushing, mowing, spiking, weed walking, edging etc. In the summer we undertake some form of maintenance most days and  cut the green three times a week. Just an hour or two of your time would be much appreciated and help ease the load on the existing team of four. To be clear, you don’t have to be able to commit every week. Full training in the use of the equipment will be given. Please speak to Nick to have a chat about what you could do to help.
Weeding and Watering – please help, just a few minutes here and there from each member watering a bed or pulling a weed would be much appreciated. If anyone would like to donate some spare bedding or a plant or two, that would be great.
Knockout Competitions – entry to these is now closed and the preparation is now being made to make the draws at coffee morning tomorrow, 21st May. Come and support the draw and if you’ve entered see who you are up against. Unfortunately we only had three entries for the fours competition so we will not be adding this to our competition schedule this year, maybe next year with more support.
One Day Competitions – As well as running our regular Coronation Trophy (Sunday 27th July), our RoseBowl and Plate (Sunday 14th September), we are also looking to run a ‘ProAm’ tournament pairing new bowlers with more experienced bowlers (Sunday 10th August), so look out nearer the time for the entry forms. For all things happening, check out the Events Page on our club website, see here
Friendlies – A big thank you to Althea for organising a number of friendlies this year, three good wins away to Barnack, at home to Deeping BA and away to Ketton was followed by defeat at Deeping BA on a tricky green. More friendly matches to come with matches home and away to Stamford and the return fixture with Barnack.
League Matches – Peterborough leagues have all begun together with the Stamford Boor and Wainwright competition, with all teams tasting success. As before, it’s not easy being a captain, so please support your captains and make every effort to fulfil your commitments based on the availability you’ve shared with your captain.

Further to my recent email, the entry forms for the 11 internal competitions are now up in the clubhouse. Please have a look and pop your names on the ones that you would like to enter. Entries for the competitions will close on Sunday 18th May with the draws being made at coffee morning on Wednesday 21st May.

Club Open Day – Saturday 3rd May 10:00 – 14:00, the form is up on the main noticeboard, please if you can help on this day, pop your name down.

The first competition of the year was drawn at coffee morning today. No google wizardry this year, old fashioned numbered tokens out of a bag this time. As usual the draw can be seen on the Club Competitions page on the website, for the Langtoft19 draw click here.

Green Opening – The green will be opening on Saturday 12th April at 10:00am. Please use the bowlr system to book your roll ups. Click on this link to get to the bowlr booking system – https://langtoft.bowlr.co.uk/account/login You should all have your usernames and passwords as previously issued, any problems let Jim know.
Membership Forms and Payment – There are still one or two forms and payments outstanding which are due by April 14th please. Payments as per details on the membership form and forms to be returned to our secretary Carol Tilley or put in the postbox in the clubhouse please. Remember that you are not eligible to play in club knockout competitions or play for the club in the local leagues unless you are a Full Playing member paid up and with a signed and submitted membership form.
Club Open Day – Saturday 3rd May 10:00 – 14:00 we will be holding our club open day hoping to recruit new members and offer them our free of charge 6 week Sunday morning coaching course. There are two things we would like you to help with please 1) tell friends and family and bring someone to the open day and 2) come to the open day to help supervise and support those who’ve turned to have a go, you don’t need any particularly skills just a friendly face and a willingness to help people. We intend to put a form up in the clubhouse for you to put your name down or please let a committee member know.
Langtoft 19 – There are still spaces available for the Langtoft19 competition which is free to enter and play. The form is on the competition noticeboard in the clubhouse. The draw will be made at coffee morning next Wednesday 16th April.
Green team – Nick is still looking for people to join the green team to help with brushing, mowing, spiking, weed walking. In the summer we undertake some form of maintenance most days and  cut the green three times a week. Just an hour or two of your time would be much appreciated and help ease the load on the existing team of four. Full training in the use of the equipment will be given. Please speak to Nick to have a chat about what you could do to help.
The new season – our 2025 summer season starts in earnest in a couple of weeks, for all you playing in the league teams, good luck, play well and have fun. Please support your captains and make every effort to fulfil your commitments based on the availability you’ve shared with your captain.

Over the winter, two teams of people have worked exceptionally hard to get the green to its current fantastic standard. As ever Nick, Mick, Adie and Jim have worked from last autumn through the winter and spring to top dress, fertilise, slit, cut, spike, remove weeds, the list is pretty long to get the green in the state you see it and ready to play. There are a couple of areas where we still need the grass seed to germinate after extensive work and levelling around the edge of the green The second team to work incredibly hard through the winter have been lead by David with the help of Gary, Tony and Jim to install the new green edging, weed block and gravel to ensure the green edges are well supported and that the green is level all the way to the edge and doesn’t slope down into the ditches. Over the last few weeks, some of the boarding has been replaced on the outsides of the ditches, all the boarding has had two new coats of very smart sage coloured paint and the AstroTurf relaid in the ditches (a gravel ditch does not meet World Bowls standards), thank you here to David, Jim, Debbie and Malcolm.

This year with effect from 1st April 2025 we have decided to introduce the Langtoft Bowls Club Lucky Squares Board to help raise funds for the club.
All you need to do is pay £2 per square (or £5 for 3 squares), then enter your name and phone number on any square(s) of your choice. Once the board is complete numbers will be drawn and you will have the chance to win a £30 first prize, £20 second prize or £10 third prize.
The board will be set up in the Clubhouse so please feel free to enter.  We look forward to your support.

Chatting with Nick yesterday, he suggests opening the green on Friday 11th April at 1pm after Friday morning maintenance, so get your outdoor bowls out and start limbering up.
For those wishing to play in the Peterborough leagues, the player registration forms have been completed, submitted to the league and circulated as applicable to the players involved.
As for the Stamford league, Mick will be registering your names with the Stamford league in the coming days.
Over the next few weeks competition entry forms will be published, so have a think about which competitions you would like to enter.
Well, here’s to a new season of bowling outdoors, good luck to everyone, have fun and play well.

Your committee is working hard to prepare for the forthcoming season and over the last couple of weeks you should have received a number of documents:-
– Rules for the internal club competitions that reflect your feedback pre and during the AGM.
– A membership form for 2025.
– A form detailing the leagues in which the club intends to compete and your opportunity to select in which you would like to play.
Please review these emails and provide feedback as appropriate, many thanks.

As you know, David and his team have been busily taking up the old flooring and laying the new flooring. Today we selectively put the tables and chairs back in the clubhouse. I say selectively as a lot of the furniture has missing protective plastic inserts in the bottom of the metal legs and as a consequence we have decided NOT to put these bits of furniture back in the clubhouse to avoid damaging the new floor. Therefore, please DO NOT take any pieces of furniture out of the changing room and put them in the clubhouse. We also have a new layout in the clubhouse designed to make the environment more social and allow better movement, come to coffee morning on Wednesday to cast your eye over the teams efforts!
A big thank you to Howden’s for supplying the flooring and underlay, thank you to David for sourcing the flooring, and organising the installation team of Gary, Brian (Hyde), Rita, Nolan and Jim. Another job well done.

Following coffee morning on Wednesday, the clubhouse was emptied of furniture in preparation for laying the new flooring. The new flooring should brighten the clubhouse and make it much easier to clean. After a couple of days effort, it’s really taking shape, thanks to David and his installation team of Nolan, Gary, Brian and Jim.

At the annual Peterborough League Presentation Evening at the Parkway Club on the 8th November, John and members of the Langtoft Red team were there picking up the award for winning the Club 55 Division 3 league. Congratulations captain John and to team members Nolan, Stephen, Melvin, Kevin, Valerie, Martin, John (Kingsmill), Mick (Leighton), Debbie, Jim, Sylvia, Althea and Graham. How will the team fare in division 2 next year?

After the rain finally abated and we had a few dry and sunny days, the end of season green maintenance took place on Friday 4th & Saturday 5th October with cutting, spiking, scarifying, seeding and top dressing. With the new edging also installed, there was the small matter of raising the green edge to the top of the new edging. A few more bags of top dressing are still required to level the edges in a few places.
Next job is to put the new membrane in the ditches followed by a layer of gravel (work scheduled for Wednesday 9th October if anyone would like to help).

A great night last Friday for the 49 quizzers who descended on Langtoft Village Hall to support Geoff’s ‘Quiz Night with a bit of a Twist’. Based on TV quizzes, the questions covered general knowledge, logic, pictures and with a joker to play too. After much head scratching and conferring, the ‘Brainy Bunch’ team ultimately came out on top after a well played joker netted them 20 points in the 1% round. Thanks Geoff for getting us organised and thanks to those who brought raffle prizes and bought the tickets.

And so the Rose Bowl and Plate competition ends the 2024 outdoor season, played under initially sunny skies and later dark skies and rain. 32 players signed up necessitating a mixture of pairs and triples matches. After the first round of matches, Alan Shakespeare , Anne White and John Kingsmill led the way with their 2 points and 11-3 win. All that changed after round 2 with John Taylor and Robin Freeman coming to the fore, before lunch was taken to recharge the batteries, a superb buffet, thank you to all contributors. Round three of the matches saw Andrew Windsor rise to the top of the table ahead of John and Robin. Having seen Robin and John drawn together for the first three matches, they were finally separated for the fourth round of matches and it was John who maintained his 100% record retaking the lead from Andrew. With most of the players agreeing to play their fifth and final games, they were rewarded with the weather clearing and it was John who held his nerve ably supported in his final game by Anne White and Ann Northen. So holding aloft the Rose Bowl for 2024 is John Taylor, and taking home the Plate is Anne White, congratulations to both of you.

Our penultimate bowling weekend of the season and our penultimate trophy was well contested by 26 players this year. The players were divided into 4 groups, playing either 5 or 6 matches against the other members of their group.

After matches of 2 bowls, 6 ends each, the top two from each group qualified for the quarter finals, congratulations going to Nick Carr and John Taylor who each qualified with a 100% win record.
Before the finals, a spider with Liz Fordham winning today’s bottle of Prosecco. And so onto the final stages of the competition where Nick and Sue played out an excellent final that went to an extra end with Nick prevailing and retaining the trophy he won last year presented by Anne White, well done Nick.
And to finish the day off, a corner to corner challenge for a chunky Kit Kat, in the men’s category won by Nick and in the ladies category, won by Lynn who nearly dislocated her shoulder in the process! Thank you to everyone who supported the day by playing, those who volunteered and the weather for being kind to us.

Congratulations to John Taylor and his team on winning the Peterborough League’s Club 55 Division 3 title. All the more remarkable as this is John and Althea’s first season with the club, to then offer to run a team in his first season with the club and go on to win the league, what a story, well done John. All season it was neck and neck with Stamford with Crowland having games in hand, but in the end in our last two games, a 10-0 win at East Community and a 10-0 win at home to Thomas Cook secured the title.

And onto the last day of our finals weekend with the last three finals for 2024. The morning session saw the final of the Men’s 2 Bowls where Jim Pryor overcame Robin Freeman’s challenge to be the first name on the new magnificent Peter White Trophy which I am very proud and honoured to be. Lunchtime challenges were enthusiastically accepted where David Booth proved that the ‘Mind The Gap’ challenge was like shelling peas by coming first with a score of 3 out of 4 on the backhand AND second with a score of 2 out of 4 on the forehand. How about the spider, where Anne White and Stephen White used Peter’s woods, with both woods ending up nearest the jack, fantastic. The raffle was drawn with Rita Hyde winning first prize or a £25 Marks and Spencer voucher, that’s Brian’s new pants sorted then. Having driven back from Suffolk, following their Golden Wedding anniversary celebration, congratulations from all of us, Nolan Catterwell featured in both the afternoon sessions. In the mixed pairs a formidable pairing of Sue Moir and Nick Carr came out winners over Nolan Catterwell and Anne White , some truly excellent bowling by all four players. Our final final, the open triples saw Malcolm Cullingworth, Melvin DeCamps and Brian Hyde pitching their skills against the 2022 winning team of John Kingsmill, Nolan Catterwell and Martin Fletcher with the former coming out winners, well done guys. Some say if you listen carefully, you can hear Brian and Melvin still ‘exchanging advice’ up and down the green!

Wow, thank you so much to all our fantastic club members who turned out to watch four more finals matches. In the morning session, Jim overcame Guernsey John’s challenge in the Fixed Jack whilst Pat Booth retained her Ladies 2 Bowl trophy in a repeat of last year’s final against Ann Northen, winning 21-17. Pat will go on to represent the club in the Northamptonshire EWBF finals next year with a view to another trip to Skegness next summer. Whilst munching on a beautifully cooked BBQ, we all had a go at the Mind The Gap competition with Mark Plyte winning the Prosecco with a score of 3 out of 4 and Mark then also winning the Spider and another bottle of Prosecco . In the true spirit of the club, Mark gifted the second bottle to Sue Moir who’s bowl was second closest in the Spider, what a kind gesture, what a great spirit we have in our club.
And onto the afternoon session where Debbie Pryor took on Sylvia Scotney in the Ladies 4 bowls with Debbie winning the first set 14-7 and a draw in the second set 8-8 meaning that Debbie got to lift the trophy this year. The second game was the Handicap singles between Graham Watkins and David Booth, neck and neck all the way with David requiring a 3 on the last end which he got to force a tie break end. After all 6 bowls were delivered, there was just a 1/4″ on the measure giving Graham a win by 1 shot, 18-17 wow what a finish. Whilst all this was going on the spectators indulged in sumptuous homemade cake washed down with coffee and tea, what a day. So that just leaves three games to be played tomorrow, let’s get down to the club and make the day special for all the finalists.

And that’s day 2 of the Langtoft club finals complete with one match, the Novice Singles Final being played between Chris Pryor and Alan Shakespeare, ably marked by Adrian Fordham this evening. Again another good turnout of members who were enthralled by the standard of play, it really was quite exceptional, well done to both players. Of course, there has to be a winner, today this was Chris 22 shots to 9. If the rest of the finals match this one for quality of shots played, then we really are in for a treat.
To all members, please come down and support the finalists and make each final a special occasion for the players. Don’t forget to bring your bowls and have a go at the lunchtime challenges. Nick and David will be running the BBQ, with tea and cake also available, its shaping up to be a great weekend.

Well, day 1 of the club finals is complete, the Men’s 4 bowl final was completed between Jim Pryor and Brian Patman with Jim sneaking home 1.5 to 0.5 sets. The second game, The Open Pairs final was contested between Brian Patman and Malcolm Nicholson playing Jim and Chris Pryor. Played on a very tricky green, the only player to get to grips with the lines was Chris and he was the deciding factor in Jim and Chris coming out on top 20-11.
There are so many people to thank, Mavis, Anne and Debbie for coffee and cakes, Nick for umpiring duties when called upon, Nolan for marking the singles match, Debbie for the photos and all the spectators who turned up to watch, applaud and make the finals special, thank you.
Tomorrow evening sees Chris playing Alan in the Novices final, let’s get down to the club and make it a special evening for them too.

Ahead of Nolan and Jeanette celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary on Saturday 31st August, we all enjoyed Bucks Fizz and Cake. Congratulations and happy anniversary to Nolan and Jeanette from everyone at Langtoft Bowls Club.

The entry form for the season finale is now up on the competitions noticeboard in the clubhouse, again, just add your name. You will play a number of short matches with teams, rinks and playing positions drawn before each match. A league table will run to reflect the results, with the top of the table winning the rose bowl and the runner up the plate. As always all entrants will provide a dish for a buffet to be enjoyed on the day, Anne and Mavis will organise this for us. Let’s see if we can get a record number of entrants this year, come on all you new bowlers, come and have a go.

The entry form for this year’s coronation trophy is now up on the competitions noticeboard in the clubhouse, just add your name. For those of you who have not played this before, it’s a real fun tournament, no rinks are in use, instead, the jack can be cast in any direction with multiple matches happening at the same time and people playing across one another. Please sign up for this one and let’s have as many people playing as possible this year. We suggest you bring a packed lunch, coffee and cake will be available.

In order to accommodate availability, we’ve had to make some changes to the plans for the club finals. The matches will now be played from Thursday late afternoon through Sunday afternoon. We have worked really hard to accommodate everyone’s availability and hope that the new schedule reflects that. Bacon Rolls, BBQ, Coffee and Cake will still be available over the weekend together with some fun challenges for you to have a go at and we’d like to run a raffle so prize donations would be well received. New posters are up in the clubhouse:-

So, with finals weekend rapidly approaching and some finalists already known, the poster below will be going up in the clubhouse. Once all finalists are known, we will issue a schedule for the weekend. As per the poster, we hope that as many members will attend the event to support those playing in the finals, we will have a BBQ at lunchtime and afternoon tea, please put your name on the poster so that we know how many to cater for. There will be some fun lunchtime activities that we would like everyone to have a go at, and finally we would like to run a raffle, so a donation of prizes would be welcomed.

Congratulations to our winners on Sunday, an absolutely fantastic effort to win three out of three finals in which our ladies qualified.

Well, it’s safe to say that the Thursday afternoon Aussie Pairs hasn’t been a massive success. In the 9 weeks I’ve been running this, we’ve only had enough players for 6 matches and in the last 3 weeks, no one has turned up to play, so we’ll knock it on the head. It’s not a problem, I expect everyone is busy with their knockout and league games.
As a club we try to offer our members different formats to keep things interesting, sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t, I understand this.
For those who did come down on a Thursday afternoon, the final table is shown here.

Tomorrow evening, Thursday 4th July at 7pm, there will be a ‘What happens Next?’ session in the clubhouse aimed at our newer members. Nick will host a chat to help you understand what happens after the recent coaching sessions and what options are available to you as club members. Bring a drink and some nibbles and ask those questions.

Last Wednesday at coffee morning, we drew the majority of this year’s club knockout competitions. You should all have received the draws by email, they have been posted on the club competition noticeboard and now they’re available on the website, click here.

Using bowlr, a number of different options are available to you…
Make rink bookings – book a practise session, book your competition matches etc.
Check the green availability – to make sure it’s not closed for green maintenance i.e. mowing.
View the diary – see who else is playing, there’s some intriguing county games coming up where club members are testing themselves against other local bowlers or maybe come and support one of our teams in a league match.
Contact information – find and view phone numbers and email for our club members.
Click here to access the rink booking system. If you are having problems using or accessing the system, please speak to Nick or Jim.

Our Thursday afternoon league is now up and running and Paul is making the early running. There is no need to register for this league, it’s just a case of turning up on a Thursday afternoon by 1:45 latest. Subject to who turns up, we will organise you into matches, ideally into pairs so that we can play Aussie Pairs. Of course, we will need to accommodate all those who turn up, so depending on the numbers, some will be playing Aussie Pairs, ideally as many as possible, whilst the remainder will play triples that week (normal triples play).

Over the winter a lot of jobs around the clubs have been completed to make our club as good as it possibly can be both for our members and our visitors alike. David managed the new roof project from inception through completion and has done a great job together with contractor Neil Utteridge and his team from Market Deeping. The plan is for no more leaks and due to the new insulation for the clubhouse to feel warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. All of your committee feel a massive sense of responsibility when taking on their roles and in particular jobs like this, we hope you like the end product.

This morning John’s ‘Dream Team’ played in the Northant’s Federation Men’s Triples and fell 11-21 to Dean Wilkinson and his team from Wittering. I’m sorry John we won’t be holidaying in Skegness in August!

We wish Dean, Dave and Dave all the best for the rest of the competition.

Great news, Saturday 13th April arrived and the green opened on schedule thanks to all the work completed by Nick and the ‘green team’ over the winter. The draw for the Langtoft 19 club competition season opener competition was made at the Wednesday coffee morning. Our first two matches for the Tuesday afternoon Club 55 Red Team and the Stamford League team in the Boor and Wainwright trophy have resulted in great wins, hopefully a sign of things to come.

Thanks to David for all the hard work he has put in managing and delivering all manor of projects to get the club ship shape for the season ahead. Tackling the Pavilion side hedge height together with weedblock and gravel to suppress the weeds, remaking the ‘doors’ under the clubhouse, managing the process to have a new roof on the clubhouse, making and installing the planters outside the entrance door and of course de-cluttering the site from all the stuff that ‘might come in handy one day’, but of course never does. Thanks also to Adie for remarking the white line trip hazards all round the site, a monumental job, not to mention the reels and reels of masking tape!

So, with the hope of no further heavy rain in the week ahead, the green will be opening next Saturday 13th April at 10:00am. Much of the preparation is complete, but members help would be appreciated this coming Wednesday 10th April from 10:00am to help brush up after the high winds and put the linings back in the ditches etc. Check out the Fixtures and Tables page to see when and whom we will be playing. Don’t forget to check out the competition area on the clubhouse noticeboard and add your name to the Langtoft 19 competition entry form.

Friday 23rd February saw our annual quiz night held at the Langtoft Village Hall. A great night, organised by Geoff with the questions courtesy of our resident quiz master Nolan. I for one thought that the questions were pitched perfectly. A great win for the 1% club, well done guys and girls. Overall £367 was raised for the club, thank you to all that participated in the quiz and bought raffle prizes. Some say that Carol and David are still eating the leftovers from their monumental picnic!

February 2024 David Tilley (2) £12.00 Peter Cox (19) £6.00

Update – A great team effort to bring down the height of the hedge, hopefully encouraging all those that use the path to the sports field to take a look and maybe even come in and have a go.

David is looking for help tomorrow 28th February at 2:00pm to further trim the hedge to the side between us and the play school. As the saying goes, many hands make light work, all help will be gratefully received. If you can, bring a pair of secateurs and gardening gloves, see you there!

The draw (Provisional) for the Boor & Wainwright Cup has been published, see here. The final is at Langtoft again this year and it would be nice to get beyond the group stage for a change. To help, 4 of our 6 group games are at home! Our first match is on Monday 29th April when we host Barnack Vikings. (The numbers in brackets are the Handicap shots head start).

The club were invited to pay a donation and decorate a tree as part of the St Michael’s church in Langtoft’s Christmas tree display. I think you’ll agree that our ladies, Mavis, Carol and Anne have made a lovely job.
The trees can be viewed Saturday 16th December 10:00 – 2:00 with stalls, bacon butties, cakes, chocolate tombola and free kids craft activities.
Langtoft bowls club is proud to be a part of the community.

A few photos from our presentation evening, apologies to all those who didn’t get ‘snapped’, we’ll try harder next year. Thank you to Carol, our own David Bailey for capturing these.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the club. A well attended AGM saw a change of guard for the committee. It was great to see a number of new faces volunteering for posts on the committee, a big thank you to them. And of course thank you very much to those exiting committee members who have done so much for the club over previous years.

Even though the 2023 playing season is well behind us, your green team continues to work hard on the green, with daily brushings and Friday green maintenance continuing to ensure that next year’s green is as good as this year’s green has been. In fact Nick tells me that next year’s green will be even better!

Your new Estate Manager, David, has been hard at work over a number of days working to try to find and fix the leak on the cabin roof. Not an easy job to locate where the water is coming in through the outer skin, thank you David.

Debbie (our own Charlie Dimmock) has been busy pruning, weeding and planting outside the club, thank you Debbie.

Last Friday, we held our presentation evening at the Black Horse, again a great evening wonderfully supported by our members. You really can’t beat a carvery, can you? Throw in some quizzes, a raffle, thank you to those who donated prizes and bought tickets, the awarding of the trophies, thank you Martin for sorting that, and you have a recipe for a great evening.

I’m sure that there’s plenty else going on I’ve omitted to mention, please let me know, most of you have my contact details and they’re available in the club and I’ll add them here.

Jim – Website, Social Media and Communications.

A cracking day to finish the season with 18 players split into 3 groups who played a series of singles games that resulted in the 3 group winners, Sue, Jim & Pat progressing to the semi finals where they met the 3 group runners up, Chris, David Booth & Nick.     The final had the 3 winners being Sue, David & Nick.  In a closely fought final it came down to the last end where David played a great shot to rob Sue of victory and forcing Sue and Nick into an extra end.  Sue then proved victorious in the extra end to go home with the bubbly.  A final corner to corner challenge finished off the day with Alan Shakespeare beating Geoff Tinson by 8 cm to win the chunky Kit Kat prize!

Thanks to Nick for organising the event.

The Rose Bowl and Plate competition held on Sunday 10th September was played in glorious weather during the morning but was unfortunately interrupted by thundery showers in the afternoon. Hence the day was prolonged by probably an hour and a half longer than expected. Nine triples took part, who for a bit of fun were all given names of pop groups. A group of five and a group of four played each other in the morning session, with the top two from each group going forward to play for the Rose Bowl in the afternoon with the remaining five playing for the Plate. After all the games had been played on a league basis, Status Quo (Phyll Long, Alan Shakespeare and Andrew Windsor) topped the Rose Bowl league and The Who (Debbie Pryor, Anne White and Peter Cox) won the Plate.

Thank you to Martin for organising the competition, and to everyone who contributed and made the day a real success.

We are delighted that Old Court Electrical have agreed to sponsor the Club for the next three years. We hope to have an official presentation on Wednesday 19th April when you will have the chance to meet our sponsor face to face.
